Life is everywhere, rising in grades of intelligence from the most primitive monad to the ineffable glory of the "monad of monads", the incomprehensible Divine Unity or One - the word 'monad' being derived from the Greek 'monas' or 'one'.

For many, including Pythagoras, Parmenides, Xenophanes, Plato, Aristotle and Plotinus, Monad was a symbol for God or the first being or the totality of all beings.
